Study Abroad Requirements:

Students who wish to study abroad should start planning at least a year ahead. To start, complete the study abroad interest form and set up a meeting with Chad Moore, Director of Path to Your Purpose. Applicants for study abroad must be a college sophomore, junior, or senior while abroad and be in good academic standing as well as in good standing with the student conduct system. Students must have a minimum of 2.5 cumulative grade point average at the time of application and throughout the study abroad program. Study abroad programs provided by some of our partner organizations may have higher minimum GPA requirements. Students interested in studying abroad during the spring semester or summer session need to make certain the Director of Financial Aid is aware of this so the aid can be properly awarded for the whole academic year. Federal financial aid and (nonperformance- related) institutional scholarships may be applied to tuition fees for approved course work for students who return to Bethany for at least one semester after their semester abroad.

My Study Abroad Experience

Natasha Quintana

In the Fall of 2019, I studied abroad in Barcelona, Spain through AIFS (American Institute for Foreign Study). It was an incredible journey filled with new adventures every week. I took classes relating to my major (design thinking, brand design, marketing and fashion, global marketing) four days a week, which gave me the opportunity to travel Friday-Sunday almost every weekend. My education was filled with projects, presentations, and independent work that my professors allowed class time for. In one of my classes, each student would bring food to share with the class and it would help us focus each day. My classes were laid back, but each professor had high expectations of us and would expect us to complete the work. They did not push you to turn in assignments, which made each student stay on top of their workload. Being a responsible student, this was an easy transition.

Outside of the classroom I spent my weekends in Germany, Paris, Nice, Rome, and Morocco. I would embrace the culture, eat local food, and appreciate the history in each country. The weekends I did not visit a new country were filled with day trips I took with my study abroad program and separate trips with   my friends. I spent these day trips visiting different cities in Spain, such as Girona, where a few episodes of “Game of Thrones” were filmed, the mountains of Tibidabo, the beach town of Sitges, exploring the Salvador Dali Museum, and many more.

The most valuable experience was becoming a Barcelona local for four months. I took the metro, ate the food, helped many lost tourists, spoke the language, and became familiar with the city.

I knew where I was going without using a map. Every street had magnificent art and breathtaking architecture. Wherever I looked I appreciated the work of Antoni Gaudi, a great exponent of Catalan Modernism. When you learn the history of the place you reside in, you cherish everything about it.

Being abroad you find yourself and grow as a person. I developed a greater independence and self-reliability in Barcelona. I couldn’t always rely on my friends to go places with me or walk with me at two in the morning. You learn to be an adult and go on adventures on your own. These skills are essential in your day-to-day life, especially as a young adult. These skills remain with me today and I will use them for many years. When you study abroad, the world is at your fingertips. It is an experience I encourage many students to pursue. It changed my life and it will change yours.

Begin the journey down your path.
