Does Bethany College work with Veterans?
Bethany College is approved to offer veterans training programs by the State Approving Agency (SAA) of the Kansas Commission on Veterans Affairs. This means qualifying veterans and their eligible dependents may use federal education benefits from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), including the Yellow Ribbon Program (YRP), to assist with the payment of related expenses. Veterans wishing to attend Bethany College must apply using the Application for Admission and must comply with all admission requirements for either freshman or transfer students.
To find out more about types of VA education benefits, including how to apply for activation of what a service member earned, go to www.va.gov/education/.
Through the VA application process, qualifying individuals establish eligibility for education benefits commensurate with services performed. When the VA confirms this eligibility, they issue the student a Certificate of Eligibility (COE). Bethany College needs to receive a copy of the COE in order to provide certification for the student who is enrolled. While pursuing the COE, students should work with the Bethany admissions office to get enrolled and pursue other possible forms of financial assistance.
Once a qualifying student is enrolled at Bethany, approximately 30 days prior to the start of the term of attendance, the School Certifying Officer (SCO) will automatically certify enrollment and continue doing so for future semesters unless told otherwise by the student or after notification from the VA that eligibility has run out. Students qualifying for Chapter 33 benefits are required each month to self-certify their enrollment to continue receiving payments. Most students do so via text with information about self-certification options, which also exists on the website provided above.
The VA initiates payments after the SCO has certified enrollment. Note that subsequent enrollment changes must be reported by the SCO and can alter VA payment amounts.
Bethany’s YRP participation stipulates that related benefit amounts are not refundable to the student. As such, the Bethany SCO checks prior to enrollment certification to determine if a difference exists between mandatory tuition and fees charges and the VA Post/911 maximum cap amount ($28,937.09 for 2024-2025) plus existing forms of federal, state, VA and institutional grant and scholarship aid. If a difference exists, Bethany will certify a maximum YRP amount that the VA will match.
Bethany College will grant academic credit for war training and experiences in conformity with the recommendations of the American Council on Education (ACE) in establishing a uniform and equitable system for evaluating and accrediting service training programs.
The Bethany SCO is Dr. Mark Bandré – Dean of Academic Innovation and College Registrar. Qualifying students should direct questions and COEs to him at bandrema@bethanylb.edu.
