Omero Catan graduated from Bethany College in 1994. Originally from Moriches, NY Catan is now a retired public school teacher residing in Bellport NY. Catan majored in History-Political Science. When asked why he chose Bethany, Catan responded, “it was my way of beginning my life on my own, using only those resources I acquired from my efforts.”
Catan credits Dr. Joyce Pigge as one of the individuals who influenced his success in education. Catan says, “One person who accepted me for my limitations at the start, and extended my academic talents, not without hardship, frustration, and occasional disappointment, was Dr. Joyce Pigge. I am grateful for her straightforward assessment and ultimately her guidance about planning for success, in studying, writing a paper, and/or being a community leader. Dr. Pigge consistently encouraged me to respond successfully, and ultimately praised me for succeeding.”
His favorite memories at Bethany college include walking on the cobblestones on main street and entering a bodybuilding contest in which he came in 19th out of 20 contestants. Catan says, “The lesson that influenced me was the importance of following up and having closure, whether it pertains to a paper, a project, or a course. It doesn't count if you put forth tremendous effort in studying a topic, unless you get credit for your "troubles." That lesson was germane in writing my dissertation. It was quite an accomplishment for me in writing each of the 5 chapters, and ultimately defending my conceptual framework.”
Before retiring from his position as Assistant Principal at Central Islip High School for 25 years, Catan worked as a correctional officer at the Hutchinson Penitentiary then attended Wichita State University for his teaching certification. He refers to his 25 years at Islip High School as his greatest professional achievement.
When asked how Bethany College helped him find the path to his purpose Catan replied, “at Bethany, I learned how to write research papers, replete with footnotes and bibliographies.”
Catan’s tip to current student teachers, “make sure you are certified to teach more than one subject.”
One thing people may not know about Catan is that he always wanted to play the trumpet.
