Audition Requirements

Voice
Potential music majors should sing two songs that contrast in character (e.g. one slow and one fast). One in a foreign language is preferred, but not required, and memorization is recommended. Those NOT planning to major in music may sing one selection of your choosing

You may bring your own accompanist, or Bethany can provide one. An accompanist will be on hand at each of the auditions days, but we ask that you provide copies of the music in advance. Contact music@bethanylb.edu for more information.

Wind Instruments

Prepare two compositions, movements, or etudes in contrasting styles, including one that demonstrates technical proficiency.

Both pieces should be played within 10 minutes.

Piano

Prepare two selections.

One selection must be a memorized solo from the standard repertoire (e.g. piano selections that have stood the test of time from composers such as Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, Bartok, Debussy, or Prokofiev.) Method teaching pieces or pop arrangements are not acceptable.

The other is a solo selection that contrasts with the standard repertoire to show your versatility. Memorization is optional, but encouraged. Most any selection is appropriate (e.g. hymn transcription, pop or jazz arrangement.)

Be prepared to sight-read and play scales.

Percussion
Auditions with two or more of the following instruments are preferred.

  • Snare: solo and one or two etudes
  • Timpani & Mallets: solo and one or two etudes, or excerpts from band/orchestra literature
  • Set: examples of patterns (sixteen bars) in various styles (swing, salsa, rock, funk) and examples of fills within above patterns (one, two, three, and four count fills)

Strings

Prepare two contrasting selections from standard solo or etude repertoire demonstrating varied styles and techniques. Orchestral and chamber literature excerpts are also acceptable. Pieces prepared for district or state solo contest would work well.

Potential Music Majors should also be prepared to play several scales of their choice.

Organ

Prepare two selections from the standard organ repertoire.

Selections should vary in character from one that demonstrates technical facility, and one that is slow and melodic (e.g. Eight Little Preludes and Fugues by J.S. Bach, prelude and fugue by Dietrich Buxtehude, trio by Josef Rheinberger.)

Be prepared to sight-read a hymn using manuals and pedal.
